Sense of Smell

During your pregnancy it can be quite common for your sense of smell to be heightened and you may find you have strong reactions towards certain foods. The smell of some food may even make you feel nauseous and you will quickly learn which those are and avoid them.

Pregnancy Nutrition

Obviously, eating well during your pregnancy is important, and doing so will boost both your health and your baby’s health. However, you do not necessarily need to ‘eat for two’, but you need to ensure that you are providing good nutrition for you and your baby.

A well balanced diet should contain something from each of the food groups including:
Dairy products
Fruit
Vegetables
Fish
Meat
Fat
Carbohydrate

Try to limit the amount of junk food as it tends not to have the nutrients you and your baby require. For many pregnant women there is little need to significantly increase the calorie intake for the first sixth months.

It is also important to try to ensure you have the correct intake of vitamins and minerals such as folic acid and iron.

It is recommended that a woman takes Folic Acid, also known as Vitamin B9, before becoming pregnant as it is an important vitamin for the formation of the baby’s nervous system. Iron is needed by a woman’s body as your body will be producing all the blood required to supply nutrition to the placenta.

Pregnancy Food Cravings

Many pregnant women experience food cravings at some point during their pregnancy. Many popular cravings can include fruit, fruit juice, sweet and salty foods, chocolate and dairy products. You do not have to over-treat yourself, but a little indulgence is unlikely to do any harm. Even some of the bizarre cravings can be indulged, but remember, whatever you are craving try to consider the nutritional value to you and your baby, and try not to over do it.

Pregnancy Nutrition and Morning Sickness

If you are feeling sick or nauseous try to eat smaller regular meals rather than two or three larger ones as you might normally do. In cases of morning sickness it may help to eat plain biscuits slowly and have a warm drink before you get out of bed in the morning. Be aware that spicy, greasy and acidic foods can make morning sickness worse.

Morning sickness can make the first trimester a difficult time to maintain a good, healthy diet. To help alleviate the symptoms of morning sickness you can try our Sea-Band acupressure wristbands which have been clinically proven to relieve the symptoms of nausea.
